Step 1

First, open the image on which we want to improve focus or highlight detail. For this tutorial, we used a wonderful photograph entitled ' The Guard 'published by Wincey in the community of Deviant Art.

Step 2

Duplicate the image layer. To do this, go to the layers panel, click on the background layer (our image) and drag the icon to create a new layer at the bottom of the layers panel, to get a new layer with a copy of the background image. We can also do it from Menu> Layer> Duplicate Layer.

Step 3

With the copy of our image layer selected, proceed to transform the image to black and white. We're going to Menu> Image> Adjustments> Desaturate to remove the color of this layer and convert it to black and white.

Step 4

Now comes the work with Photoshop's High Pass filter. SELECTED still copy layer of our image desaturated, go to Menu> Filter> Other> High Pass. In the popup window which appears, we can apply a value of approximate radius of 1 pixel. When it comes to improving the focus of a photograph, we can play with radio values between 0.5 and 3 pixels for Photoshop High Pass filter, depending on the power of the final effect we want to achieve.

Step 5

Finally, only need to change the blending mode of the layer containing the high pass filter to achieve the desired effect. In Photoshop layers panel, change the layer blending mode to Overlay and as if by magic, our image becomes a much more focused and full of subtle details.
