Tips for Hiring an IT Manager

Have you come to the conclusion that hiring an IT Manager is the best thing for your company? Have you considered all other options, but are sure that this is the right move?

If you find yourself in this position, it’s time to take a few steps in the right direction. This doesn’t mean you have to hire an IT Manager in the next few days. It simply means that you are putting yourself in position to make an informed hiring decision in the near future.

Here are several tips you can follow as you search for and attempt to hire the perfect IT Manager for your company:

  • Know why you’re making this decision. There is more to hiring an IT Manager than simply deciding that this is the right thing to do. You need to make it clear as to why you are hiring this person. By taking this step upfront, you won’t have any regrets down the road. If you can’t decide why you need to hire an IT Manager, it may be best to put this decision on the backburner for the time being.
  • Outline responsibilities. This goes along with the first tip. In addition to knowing why you’re hiring an IT Manager, you need to outline the responsibilities that this person will take on. With this information in hand, it’s much easier to conduct the interview process and move toward hiring the right person.
  • Interview several candidates. This is where many companies get caught up. They think they’ve found the right person, so they only bring that candidate in for an interview. Unfortunately, this often leads to a situation in which the company hires somebody who is not fully qualified (or the best fit). It would be in your best interest to interview a minimum of three candidates. By taking this approach, you can lessen the likelihood of making a mistake.
  • Get the help of other employees. For example, if there is somebody in your company who will be working closely with the IT Manager, let them sit in on the interview process. It is always a good idea to have at least one other person involved in making the final decision.
  • Ask key questions. You need to make sure the person has the same goals and approach as you. For example, learn more about their strategies associated with problem solving. If you need to schedule more than one interview, so be it. This gives you the opportunity to really get into the finer details.

Along with all the above, you should do whatever you can to help the person achieve success. This doesn’t mean that you should step in and do his or her job. However, there are steps you can take to help them get started on the right foot.
